Cashiers Lodge

The Cashiers Lodge, designed for a gently sloping parcel in Cashiers, sits very quietly on a site with mature mountain laurel, hemlocks, and rhododendron. By taking advantage of the existing vegetation we were able to very carefully integrate this house onto its spot and provide the owners, both experienced gardeners, an incredible head start on their outdoor room.

It has been noted that the flora of Western North Carolina and the Southern Appalachians are among the most diverse and beautiful in the entire world; by carefully sitting this fine home on its lot we were able to create an outdoor room. The sloping hill forms one "wall" of the room, the house another, with the balance provided by existing and planted vegetation. Such an outdoor room is easily the best room in any house, one that can be enjoyed for three seasons, and one that doesn't need to be built, heated, vacuumed, painted, etc. It must, of course, be planned!
